What Is a QBO File? How to Open, Read and Convert It

By ConvertQBO Team ·

A QBO file (.qbo) is a bank or credit card statement in the QuickBooks Web Connect format. Banks offer it as a download next to CSV and PDF, and QuickBooks imports it as bank transactions. Under the hood it is an OFX (Open Financial Exchange) file with a few Intuit-specific fields.

“QBO” is also the common abbreviation for QuickBooks Online. This article is about the file format.

What is inside a QBO file

Open a .qbo file in a text editor and you will see a short header followed by tagged data:

OFXHEADER:100
DATA:OFXSGML
VERSION:102
...
<OFX>
<SIGNONMSGSRSV1><SONRS> ... <INTU.BID>3000</SONRS></SIGNONMSGSRSV1>
<BANKMSGSRSV1><STMTTRNRS><STMTRS>
<CURDEF>USD
<BANKACCTFROM><BANKID>...<ACCTID>...<ACCTTYPE>CHECKING</BANKACCTFROM>
<BANKTRANLIST>
<STMTTRN>
<TRNTYPE>DEBIT
<DTPOSTED>20261001120000
<TRNAMT>-54.20
<FITID>2026100112345
<NAME>OFFICE DEPOT
</STMTTRN>
...

The important parts:

  • INTU.BID — the Intuit bank ID. QuickBooks Desktop uses it to check that the file comes from a bank that supports Web Connect.
  • BANKACCTFROM / CCACCTFROM — the account the statement belongs to (bank or credit card).
  • STMTTRN — one block per transaction with type, posting date (YYYYMMDD…), amount (negative = money out), a unique FITID, payee name and optional memo or check number.

How to open a QBO file

  • In QuickBooks Desktop: File → Utilities → Import → Web Connect Files.
  • In QuickBooks Online: Banking → Bank transactions → Link account → Upload from file.
  • Without QuickBooks: open it in any text editor to look at it, or convert it to a spreadsheet with the QBO to Excel converter or the QBO to CSV converter. Both run in your browser, so the statement is not uploaded anywhere.

Why does my bank offer QBO, QFX and OFX?

They are three flavours of the same format. QBO is for QuickBooks, QFX for Quicken, OFX is the generic standard. The differences are small but matter for imports — see QBO vs QFX vs OFX.

Can I create a QBO file myself?

Yes. If your bank only offers CSV or Excel, convert CSV to QBO or Excel to QBO. The converter writes a valid OFX 1.02 file with a bank ID, an account block and a FITID for every transaction.

Common QBO import problems

  • QuickBooks Desktop rejects the bank. The INTU.BID value is not one QuickBooks accepts for Web Connect. Re-create the file with another bank ID.
  • Transactions land in the wrong account. QuickBooks remembers which account a bank/account number combination belongs to. Check the link the first time you import.
  • Nothing new appears. Every FITID in the file was imported before, so QuickBooks treats them as duplicates.
